Overview

Advanced Technologies and Laboratories (ATL), a Planned Systems International (PSI) company, is hiring for a Industrial Hygienist in Richland, WA.

 

This position will support Navarro-ATL. Navarro-ATL is located in Richland, WA and operates, manages, and maintains the 222-S Laboratory Complex for the Department of Energy. Navarro-ATL members are Navarro Research and Engineering, Inc. (Oak Ridge, TN), and Advanced Technologies and Laboratories International (Gaithersburg, MD).

Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities

Conducts health programs to recognize, eliminate, evaluate, and control occupational and environmental factors or stresses arising from the workplace or facility that may cause sickness, impaired health or well-being, or significant discomfort and inefficiency among workers. Coordinates the monitoring of all workplace environments by analyzing work operations and processes, materials, equipment, and work habits of employees; measures the magnitude of exposure to workers of all environmental hazards by selecting or devising methods and instrumentation suitable for such measurements; and presents specific conclusions and recommendations to appropriate management groups. Prepares rules, standards, and procedures as necessary to promote the healthful conduct of all work practices and the prevention of hazardous or nuisance exposure to the surrounding community. Assists supervision in educating employees on practices, precautions, and procedures established. Reviews present and proposed standards and surveys new installations. Audits programs and conditions at all facilities; provides written reports of findings with recommendations for improvement (where needed); and follows up on implementation.

 

Responsibilities: Grade 18

  • Under minimal supervision, incorporates complete understanding of Industrial Hygiene (IH) practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and programmatic planning where specific detailed objectives are stated.
  • Performs comprehensive practices of IH by anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling environmental factors or stresses in the workplace.
  • Provides limited guidance and direction to less senior IH professionals.
  • Carries out development and qualification programs on tasks concurrent with other phases of assignment.
  • Performs advanced assessments of work exposures; designs and conducts comprehensive exposure monitoring strategies.
  • Ensures compliance with technical regulatory requirements.
  • Develops alternate solutions to existing problems, performing all necessary detail work.
  • Evaluates proposals and makes recommendations based on proposed projects/tasks.
  • May delegate portions of detail work to less senior personnel.
  • Prepares procedures and other documents supporting or publicizing technical effort.
  • Develops and leads implementation of continuous improvement initiatives within the group.
  • Takes necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or will create an unsafe condition.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities: Grade 20

  • Under administrative direction, incorporates conventional and advanced IH practices for the assigned facility or programmatic area.
  • Applies IH activities such as integrating or complying with complicated technical requirements or application of new or special materials or processes. Provides IH consultation for challenging coordination or oversight requirements requiring problem solving and programmatic planning where only general objectives are given.
  • Provides comprehensive IH support to the facilities such as monitoring programs, procedures, and work package reviews.
  • Assists management in compliance with technical and regulatory requirements.
  • Performs advanced predictive assessments of work exposures. Designs and conducts comprehensive exposure monitoring strategies.
  • Provides briefings on hazardous chemicals and performs on-the-job and job performance measurement (OJT/OJE) training.
  • Serves as subject matter expert for specific IH disciplines as required by 10 CFR 851, OSHA, ACGIH, EPA and state programs.
  • Communicates results and objectives both verbally and in written form to customers, colleagues and management.
  • Enhances expertise through participation in technical societies. Keeps abreast of industry best practices and changes to the profession. Produces documents, reports, papers, articles or presentations as necessary.
  • Demonstrates commitment to quality concepts by active participation and successful implementation of department initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Qualifications: Grade 18

  • Bachelor’s (BA/BS) degree in Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health, Occupational Health or related physical or biological science and 7 years related experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • 2 years of experience writing Industrial Hygiene Exposure Assessments and implementation of controls through Work Packages, Work Permits or Procedures.
  • 1 year of experience supporting work at Hanford or at other DOE sites.
  • Experience providing sampling direction to technicians.

Minimum Qualifications: Grade 20

  • Bachelor’s (BA/BS) degree in Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health, Occupational Health or related physical or biological science and 10 years related experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • 5 years of experience writing Industrial Hygiene Exposure Assessments and implementation of controls through Work Packages, Work Permits or Procedures.
  • 2 years of experience supporting work at Hanford or at other DOE sites.
  • Experience providing sampling direction to technicians.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience supporting analytical laboratory operations.
  • Experience supporting facility operations and maintenance.
  • Experience managing industrial hygiene programs.
  • Supervisory experience in related field.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)

Compensation

Grade 18: $109,013 - $137,538

Grade 20: $131,888 - $166,263

 

The grade level offered to the selected candidate will be based on business needs and the candidate's education, training, and/or relevant experience.
